Just got back from China, too much censorship on everything. A lot of the internet is blocked because of my first reason. People are nice, very very nice. Good food.

I am a african american woman in my mid 40's and would like to move to china maybe teach english. I have no dependents or anything holding me here, and really would like to work in china or some parts of it. Should I give up the idea knowing I may encounter racial issues.

Sounds much more meaningful, Tom - motivated students (or learning how to motivate them, for those that can) make teaching a lot more meaningful

I can relate to most of the points here, especially about teaching high school students. My first 6 months teaching in a high school started really well but near the end I felt like they could have replaced me with a trained monkey, such were the demands for entertainment and the lack of desire to learn oral english. It was frustrating and demoralizing. This time around I'm teaching highly motivated younger kids at a small private school with 6 student classes. Pure teaching bliss!

CathyMu, have you ever lived outside China?
First, are we in the same city? The stress of living in Shanghai is appalling. Opportunities ????, this is a myth. Experiencing the East? I have lived in Thailand, Vietnam, India, Hong Kong and now here...all are better locations for "experiencing the East", and lastly, the "foreign media" please!

I want to add four other good reasons.
First, you can enjoy your life peacefully almost everywhere in China.
Second, there are more opportunities in China than many other countries. If you want to study abroad, come to China. There can provide you with a huge number of world-famous universities and an assortment of different majors. If you want to have better jobs, come to China. As one of the fastest-developing countries, they can list a lot positions for you. If you want to have your own business, come to China. As a developing country, compared with developed countries, they have a huge number of new frontiers haven’t been covered yet.
Third, China is among the best destinations for you to experience the unique characteristics of the East.
Forth, as a foreign, you may never know a real China without being there. The foreign media may never present you a real China.

Comment to the 4th poster, Lee:You wrote the worst reason to come to China is because of yellow fever. Why is that a bad thing? By the way, white fever is a much bigger problem than yellow fever.
