Best Internet Service in Shanghai, China

My Internet is already up and running. Thank you OCA Internet!

When I was living in Shenzhen (a week ago) in southern China, my girlfriend and I were subscribed to two Internet lines. The reason was that the Internet service provided by China Telecom was password protected and I could not figure out a sustainable way to split one line between two computers, my laptop was finicky about the whole thing.

Well, apparently the digital cable Internet in Shanghai has no such restrictions, no login and password, and runs quite well! In addition to this, they come by and install it the next day, and you don’t have to go to a sign up location like you do with China Telecom (in Shenzhen China Telecom will come to your door too).

The name of the service is OCA, or 东方有线. To be honest, I am not sure if they have any connection to the digital TV company in Shanghai (not yet, at least). Their service number is: 96877. It’s only 770 RMB for a half year’s service (free modem and installation) or 1200 RMB for a year (both with unlimited Internet time), which is a much better deal than China Telecom in Shanghai (unless you just want 30 hours/month or so – they have cheaper plans with very low usage limits).

Plus, there is no hassle in terms of getting a copy of your passport, visa, or anything like that (which is the case with China Telecom in Shenzhen, in Shanghai you have to go to one of their offices unless you are a Shanghai “Hukou”/resident). Summing things up:

OCA – The Best Internet Service in Shanghai, China

  1. Lowest price
  2. Easy, quick installation
  3. No waiting to sign up
  4. (so far) Reliable service
  5. Multiple users for one household

Again, I recommend against going with China Telecom for Internet service in Shanghai, China. If you are looking to use the Internet in Shanghai, try out these other guys. Their service number is 96877.

We have had problems with our internet now for a year, and are thinking about changing, have you experienced any problems with your internet since you got it?

  2. 2|Jeremy says:

    Hey Kristian,

Yeah I did run into some problems with that service, several months of very spotty connections. Don’t think there is any perfect solution, but hear that China Telecom is more stable.

    You are mistaken
    It’s not the best
They lease their servers from China Telecoms. China Telecom belongs to the government and their slow down their rivals servers on purpose. So if you are interested in surfing non-Chinese websites go with Telecom
    .
As for sharing your internet connection for ADSL (=”password protected”) – get a router – it’s about 150 kuai, can act as a firewall as well.
