Follow Your Dreams

Add-Oil ManIf you need help trying to figure out what to do in your life (including whether or not to come to China), there’s just one simple rule: Follow your dreams. Don’t just stumble your way toward them, sprint full speed.

Every new day brings new ideas on things that could be done to move in the direction of my dreams. And every day brings with it frustration that it’s all so far away, and that life isn’t quite what I expected. But every day is a push in the right direction. So eventually, I’ll get there.

The only question is how fast.

How about you – how long will it take to realize your dreams? And how hard will you push yourself to get there?

What the heck does this have to do with China?

Two things, really:

  1. You probably have some China related dreams. Whether it’s learning Chinese fluently, traveling the length and breadth of China, settling in for the long haul, making money, living on the cheap, becoming a China internet mogul, furthering the field of journalism, or trying to force China to clean up its act, something is likely keeping or drawing you here if you are reading this.
  2. You may well be competing with people in China (or anywhere in the world) for your dream – so you had best push yourself harder and smarter than ever before. This reality, while seemingly trite, is a key insight that living in China really drives home.
