Free WordPress Template

TCE 2.0 ScreenshotThis is the first template I have created for WordPress, and it’s called TCE 2.0. If you want to download this free WordPress template just click on the image to the left.

Streamlined, Quick-loading WordPress Template

I strove to write simplified code for this template, and hopefully you can tell. If you know a bit about editing or making templates, you’ll quickly see how compact it is (I hope).

Magazine Concept Template for WordPress

Just like on this site, this template has a magazine-like front page. If you want the homepage to look like the rest of the site, just delete home.php in the TCE 2.0 directory. Otherwise, this is the file to edit if you want to change the front page of your site.

In order to fill the ‘magazine cover’ with an article, you just need to do the following:

  • WordPress More ButtomCreate a new post with ‘features’ as one of its categories – At the top of the article you should have a very short excerpt or short description, which should be followed by the WordPress ‘more’ button (the one on the left)
  • New posts will not take the place of this feature post, until you write your next “feature”, that is. This helps to very strongly highlight content you would like your readers to see.
  • Replace feature.jpg in the TCE 2.0 directory with whatever jpeg file you wish to take its place. The template allocates 500 x 500 pixels for this space, so its best if you replace feature.jpg with another 500 x 500 pixel .jpg file (in case you’re not sure what jpg is, it’s just one of the more standard formats for saving images digitally) – smaller files will fit as well, but I recommend arranging white space around the file in an image editor to get to 500 x 500 pixels instead of messing with other details.

Changing the links at the top of the page (in the link boxes)

To change the links in the four boxes, edit the links in the link box dividends (lb1, lb2, lb3, & lb4) within Header.php, then copy them to Home.php. Remember, to link within your site you only need relative links – like <a href=”/about/”>about</a>, and not the full address.

Fixes and updates

If anyone can provide any advice on how to prevent home.php from being displayed when one clicks ‘next’ or ‘previous’, please let me know. Also, I would like to make it possible to change the “magazine cover picture” (feature.jpg) from within the WordPress panel, but this is currently way beyond my PHP capability. Also, it would be great if I could figure out how to create a php file for just the link box portion of the site and reference it in several places to avoid having to copy it from header.php to home.php.

This is a free WordPress Template

The template is 100% free to use, just make sure to keep the link to WordPress and this site in the footer, as well as not changing the description of the template in stylesheet.css.

I was told that wordpress sites could not be accessed from China due to the firewall. Is this true? Easy to get around? I am worried that I will not be able to update my blog while there, or people in China will not be able to comment.

Hi Sarah – wow it’s been a long time, hadn’t realized I still had this template up (it’s not very good, obviously)

Sometimes wordpress.com sites are accessible, sometimes not (access is more reliable than blogger).

There are ways to use proxies directly to access your site and control panel, though.

But the only way to get around it for sure is to host your site somewhere else (you can find hosting for $50 / year) that doesn’t get blocked by the firewall. Good luck.
