Genetically Altered Food in China – How do you Tell?

Giant China Potato - Note: Potato actual size, but doesn’t actually glowSo you’re in China trying to figure out what food is or is not genetically altered. How do you do it?

Genetically altered vegetables are obvious in China

Don’t worry, there are many easy ways to tell which vegetables have been genetically altered – they’re usually 2 – 3x the original size. Potatoes bigger than your stomach. Carrots that are more like walking sticks than the length of your hand. Cucumbers taller than your little tike back home.

Genetically altered vegetables are pretty easy to spot. They don’t really glow, of course, they’re just gianormous.

What about other kinds of genetically altered food in China?

To be honest… I don’t have a clue how to tell the non-genetically altered food from the genetically altered food unless they are giant vegetables. And really you should be more worried about eating fake food in China than genetically altered food. The dangers to your health are far higher.

What about you… can you tell the difference between natural, genetically altered, and fake foods in China? Do you care?

Yeah, I’m sure there is already a lot of genetically altered food and next time I’ll try to watch out for them. But often I’m not so sure whether they are just another sort or genetically altered. For example the cucumbers are much thinner but also longer. And the pears and peaches are just gigantic, but I think they are just another sort that we don’t have.
    Interesting blog!

    Hi naturegirl,

Thanks for the compliment – definitely some of the foodstuff is just a different variety, but some of the food is definitely bigger than could be accounted for by basic genetic variation, at least that’s my best guess =)

The UK and USA have this problem especially with mass produced food, you tend to notice the difference in the taste and everybody SHOULD care if the food standards DROP what effect will this have on us as people and our bodies in the LONGTERM?
