OZ - It's hard to say, but a couple of years ago I rented a short term guest house / tiny hotel for 30 RMB / night.

And 'decent' only by local standards, but yeah that seems like it would be about the rate.

The problem now is visas, don't know how you can get a long term visa for China without a job.

How much does it cost to rent an apt per month in Yangshuo? Decent one? Really only 500 RMB.

Hi Shahab,

With recent visa clamp-downs, it might be very hard to impossible to do something like this - have to wait and see.

I doubt any of the three have wi-fi / 3G - Internet cafes and the like exist with decent speeds so it seems like the internet connection would be ok, but not for sure.

Great post.
As an internet marketer I left my hometown to Malaysia seeking a life with better quality. Well, I didn't get what I wanted. Life is not cheap in Malaysia and the quality of everything from transportation to food and internet sucks.

I was in China for about one month last summer and it still think it was a dream. Specially Beijing and Hangzhou. Things where damn cheap, quality was extremely high and cities where clean and beautiful.

I'm thinking of going to china again for a long term stay. Your post helped me to find some new cities. But I want to leave you some questions and I hope you'll answer it immediately.

How's the Internet access in Lijiang, Dali or Yangshuo? My most dissatisfaction with Malaysia (along with its insecurity) is the low quality of services specially the internet connection which is not reliable at all.

I remember in Beijing they had free and very fast WiFi everywhere. what abt those other cities that you mentioned.
Is there any 3G Internet service. How much does it cost?
