Danshui by Chen Chengbo Sets New Record for Chinese Oil Painting

It’s interesting that this article came out when it did, because I was about to write an article about the Bubble in Chinese Art, but apparently a new record has been set for a Chinese oil painting. The name of the Chinese painting in question is Danshui, done by Taiwanese painter Chen Chengbo. Apparently it sold for HK$34,840,000 yesterday, quite a feat for the Chinese art world. The title of the painting, “Danshui” (淡水), probably translates best to “calm water”. If you have a better translation from Chinese let me know.

The record was set at the Chinese Modern Art Auction, and broke two previous records that were both set this year. The Chinese art world is flying high, but might have to come back to earth soon.
