OMG.I went to high school in china, it is probably the closest thing to nazi concentration camp on earth. But no one in college works hard,I have no idea how to work hard in my professional career.I know this chinese guy in england whose mom thinks he should go to highschool here,so he could understand the importance of hardwork.I told him not to do it, he might commit suicide after 2 weeks.

Zach and Slick:
"lazy voters whose general opinions are easily influenced through mass media propaganda"

Quite true. Back in the Western Wold, I realise that the "freedom of speech" is nowhere to be found these days. The pro-Tibet mouvement is much bigger than I anticipated: respected journalists are openly pro-Tibet.The Olympic torch relay was a disgrace in the U.K. and in France: ignoring the obvious, many journalists presented the "idea of that relay" to Hitler`s Olympics.

No one shows the background, the past that leads to today`s Tibet.

Everybody seems to be "dalailamaing" the Olympics, China, Human rights,Communism, Pollution etc.

It is Ionesco`s "Rhinocéros".

Zach - democracy is an illusion. There is only dictatorship or a libertarian form of government. Every other system is just a stepping stone in one or the other direction. Democracy = tyranny of the majority (lazy voters whose general opinions are easily influenced through mass media propaganda) = socialism = path to communism.

Ann - "communism" has never been anything more than illusion to the uneducated masses and a vehicle by means of which totalitarians control the masses. One of its founding principles is the destruction of the nuclear family -- in presumed theory to "free" women from the oppression of "patriarchy", yet in every factual outcome to create individuals who can be exploited far more easily by those with the will and desire to control. See the article "If I were a Chinese factory worker..." (published by the author of this blog) to see the outcome. Still don't believe it? Then research the start of communism in Russia : the promises of liberation, unrestricted sex, no-fault divorce (when it was introduced in the US in 1970, a visiting Russian female lawyer commented to someone that they've had the same system for a number of decades). You'll find remarkable similarities; you will find history repeating itself.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for the kind words. It sounds like you truly wanted to help out your students and other kids, that is very cool.

There is almost no real socialism (communism, whatever) in today's China - at least all of the help out others aspects of socialism.

Another way of putting it is thus: Western Europe, and even the US, is far more socialist than today's China.

Very good blog! I did teach English in China where I taught 3 times what the Chinese teachers did...My students could recite pages and pages of texts but failed to be able to have a simple, easy conversation. However, one must point out that education is expensive and thus is for the wealthy. No money, no education = no future. I tried to do volunteer work for poor kids: nothing was offered and the idea of helping "those" at my school did not go well: I was told to concentrate on my students instead. Peasants are looked down and made fun of (by my students anyway). Where is the Communism in that system for the rich only ?
